Offshore web and software development for Melbourne

Melbourne is the most design-literate market we serve. Buyers here are less interested in the hourly rate than in whether the work will be any good, which suits us, and a large share of our Victorian engagements come through local studios rather than direct.

Melbourne has a genuinely different character from Sydney as a buying market, and treating the two as interchangeable is a mistake we see suppliers make constantly. Sydney is corporate, procurement-driven and rate-conscious. Melbourne has a deeper independent studio scene, a broader industry base across retail, health and education, and a buyer who is markedly more willing to pay for craft.

That changes what the conversation is about. Melbourne enquiries rarely open with a rate question. They open with the work: what have you built that looks like this, who did the design, how do you handle the parts that are hard. We prefer it, and it is why a disproportionate share of our Victorian work is white-label engineering behind Melbourne design studios who have sold something ambitious and need it built properly.

This page covers how that arrangement works, what we cost in Australian dollars, and the practical reality of the time difference from Victoria, which observes daylight saving and therefore shifts by an hour twice a year.

The Melbourne sectors we work in

Melbourne work more often arrives as a partnership with an existing local design studio that has won the account and needs engineering capacity behind it. That white-label arrangement suits us: the studio owns the client relationship and we build.

The studio partnership model, which is most of our Melbourne work

Melbourne supports more independent design studios per capita than anywhere else in Australia, and most of them are small: between three and twenty people, strong on strategy and design, thin on engineering capacity. That is not a criticism. It is a sensible way to run a design business, and it creates a recurring problem when a studio wins a build larger than it can deliver.

The three options are to decline the work, hire and then carry the cost through the next quiet quarter, or subcontract. For a studio of that size the third is usually the only one that does not distort the business, and the entire risk sits in who you choose.

Our arrangement is deliberately plain. You own the client, the strategy, the design and the commercial relationship. We build, inside your repository, to your conventions, under your brand. We do not appear in deliverables, join client calls unless you want us to, or contact your client after the engagement. The non-solicitation is a contract term.

The engagements that work best are the ones where we are brought in before the design is finalised, so we can flag the parts that will be expensive to build before they are sold to the client. A studio that involves us at pitch stage generally has a better margin on the project than one that hands over a signed-off design with three technically awkward interactions in it.

In practice

You keep the client, the brief, the design and the commercial terms.
We work in your repository, to your conventions and your definition of done.
No contact with your client during or after, written into the contract.
Bring us in at pitch stage and we will flag what is expensive before you sell it.
We can join client calls as your engineering team, or never appear at all.

Every engagement starts with a conversation, not a proposal template.

Retail and eCommerce, which dominates the direct work

Where Melbourne businesses come to us directly rather than through a studio, it is most often retail. Victoria has a large independent retail sector and a correspondingly large number of stores that have outgrown the platform they started on.

The problems recur. A catalogue that was four hundred products at launch is now four thousand and category pages take six seconds to render. Faceted navigation that filters acceptably at small scale falls over when someone combines three filters. Stock that is accurate in the warehouse system and wrong on the storefront because the sync runs nightly and sells things that are gone. Checkout abandonment nobody has instrumented well enough to diagnose.

None of these are design problems, which is why a store can look excellent and still underperform. They are engineering problems in catalogue architecture, query design, caching and integration, and they are what we spend most of our Melbourne retail time on.

The commercial case is usually easy to calculate honestly, which we insist on doing before quoting. If category pages render in 900 milliseconds instead of six seconds and mobile conversion moves by even half a percentage point, the build pays for itself quickly. If it will not, we say so.

Health, education and the compliance layer

Melbourne has a substantial healthcare, medtech and education sector, and both carry data obligations that shape how an engagement has to be structured.

For healthcare, the constraint is almost always that patient information should not leave Australia and in many cases should not leave the client environment at all. That is entirely workable and it changes the architecture: we build against anonymised or synthetic datasets, production access is restricted to named individuals under logged conditions, and the data itself stays in an Australian region of your cloud account. We propose this by default rather than waiting for your privacy officer to require it.

Education is similar with the added complication of student data and, for providers with international students, cross-border considerations of their own. The same structure applies.

What we will not do is claim expertise in Australian health privacy law or the specific requirements of an accreditation body. We build to a specification; someone who knows the regulatory detail should write it. Suppliers who claim otherwise on a first call are usually about to learn it on your project.

Timezone from Victoria, including the daylight saving shift

Victoria observes daylight saving, so the gap to India is four and a half hours for part of the year and five and a half for the rest. That matters more than it sounds, because a standing weekly call scheduled in April is at the wrong time by November unless someone remembers to move it.

We handle that by fixing the call in your local time rather than ours and absorbing the shift on our side. Our people move; your calendar does not. It is a small thing and it removes a recurring irritation that offshore engagements otherwise accumulate.

The usable overlap is your early-to-mid afternoon against our morning: roughly three hours in winter, two in summer. As with Sydney, that supports one substantial weekly call and written handovers rather than daily standups.

For studio partnerships specifically, the overlap is usually enough because the communication is developer to developer and largely asynchronous by nature. Code review, pull request comments and written specification do not need a meeting.

What we cost, and the honest comparison

Melbourne agency rates are marginally below Sydney but still high by any international standard. The bands below are indicative for original work with us.

For studios: what to charge your client

Most Melbourne studios we work with bill their client at local rates and retain the margin, which is the correct commercial arrangement and one we have no interest in undercutting. We are your supplier, not your competitor, and the non-solicitation in our agreement exists so that you can hand us a client relationship without risk.

The time difference, stated plainly

3 hours a day where we are both at a desk

Our working day of 09:30–19:30 IST covers roughly 14:00–24:00 AEST, so the usable overlap is your afternoon against our morning — about three hours, or two when daylight saving is in effect in New South Wales and Victoria. Queensland does not observe it, so Brisbane and the Gold Coast hold a steady four-and-a-half-hour gap all year.

Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles

APP 8 governs cross-border disclosure of personal information, which is the clause that matters when an Australian business engages an offshore developer. In practice it means you remain accountable for what we do with the data, so the contract has to name what we may access, where it is stored and what happens at the end. We work to that structure by default and will sign your template rather than insisting on ours.

Questions

What Melbourne buyers ask

We will tell you in the first conversation if we are a poor fit for what you are describing, including when the time difference makes us the wrong choice.

Yes, and it is the majority of our Victorian work. You keep the client, the strategy, the design and the commercial terms. We build inside your repository to your conventions, under your brand, and we do not contact your client during or after the engagement. That non-solicitation is a contract term rather than an assurance. Bring us in at pitch stage and we will flag technically expensive parts before you sell them.

It shifts the gap between four and a half and five and a half hours, so the usable overlap moves between roughly three hours and two. We fix standing calls in your local time and absorb the shift on our side, so your calendar does not need adjusting twice a year. The rhythm is one substantial weekly call plus written daily handovers rather than daily standups.

Yes, and it is the most common direct enquiry we get from Victoria. The recurring problems are category pages that degrade as the catalogue grows, faceted navigation that fails on combined filters, and stock sync that sells items already gone. Those are engineering problems rather than design ones, which is why a store can look excellent and still underperform commercially.

We build healthcare systems, and we structure them so patient data does not leave your environment. Development runs against anonymised or synthetic datasets, production stays in an Australian region of your cloud account, and access is limited to named individuals under logged conditions. We do not claim expertise in Australian health privacy law; your privacy officer should write the requirements and we will build to them.

A corporate site with a CMS is typically A$28,000 to A$80,000 from a Melbourne agency and A$2,500 to A$8,000 with us. A Shopify or WooCommerce build is A$22,000 to A$110,000 locally against A$2,000 to A$10,000. Those are bands for original work, not quotations, and the largest variable in either case is integration with systems you already run.
