eCommerce SEO, where category pages decide everything

On most stores the category pages carry the commercial search volume and the product pages carry almost none. Agencies that spend the budget on blog content have optimised the wrong surface.

Why the generic answer fails here

A store with three thousand products and faceted navigation can generate hundreds of thousands of crawlable URL combinations, almost all near-duplicate. Google spends its crawl budget on those instead of on your category pages, and the pages that would actually rank never get crawled often enough to compete. This is an architecture problem and no amount of content fixes it.

eCommerce SEO is structurally different from content SEO and the difference is usually missed. On a content site the work is producing pages worth ranking. On a store the pages already exist and the work is making sure the right ones are crawlable, indexable and distinguishable.

The commercial search volume sits on category and subcategory pages, because that is how people search: a category term plus a qualifier. Individual product pages capture brand and model searches, which are lower volume and frequently already dominated by the manufacturer or a marketplace.

So the highest-return work is category architecture, faceted navigation control and crawl efficiency, none of which is visible in a typical SEO proposal.

Faceted navigation, the biggest single problem

Every combination of filters on a store can generate a URL. Colour, size, price band, brand, material and sort order multiply quickly, and a store with a moderate catalogue can produce hundreds of thousands of crawlable variants of essentially the same page.

The consequences compound. Crawl budget is consumed on near-duplicates instead of on the pages that matter, so new products and updated categories take longer to be picked up. Signals are diluted across variants rather than concentrating on one canonical page. And in bad cases thin filter combinations get indexed and compete with the category page they came from.

Controlling this is a set of deliberate decisions rather than a single fix: which facet combinations are valuable enough to be indexable, which are canonicalised to the parent, which are blocked from crawling entirely, and how the internal linking reinforces that hierarchy.

The valuable combinations are the ones people actually search: a category plus a single high-intent qualifier such as a brand or a material. Those deserve their own indexable page with distinct content. Three-filter combinations almost never do.

In practice

Decide which facet combinations are indexable, by search demand rather than by default.
Canonicalise the rest to the parent category.
Block low-value combinations from crawling entirely.
Internal linking reinforcing the hierarchy you chose.
Crawl budget monitored in Search Console rather than assumed.

Category pages need content, and product pages need structure

A category page that is a grid of products and nothing else has almost nothing for a search engine to understand beyond the products it lists, and it competes against pages that explain the category.

The remedy is not a block of keyword text below the fold, which is the standard agency answer and has been ineffective for years. It is genuinely useful category content: what distinguishes the products in this category, how to choose between them, what the common mistakes are, and what the price bands mean. Placed where it helps a buyer rather than hidden at the bottom.

Product pages need structure more than prose. Complete structured data with price, availability, condition, and review data where you genuinely have it. Unique descriptions rather than the manufacturer text every competitor also published, which is the single most common cause of product pages failing to rank. And variant handling that does not create a separate thin page per size.

Out-of-stock handling matters more than most stores realise: removing the page discards accumulated equity, leaving it buyable generates cancellations, and the right treatment is to keep it, mark it honestly and route to the alternative.

Enquiries now arrive with specifications already attached

Our previous website had a stock photograph and a paragraph about commitment to quality. It brought us nothing in four years. Sayak spent two days on our shop floor before drawing anything, and what they built lists our machine capacities, tolerance ranges and certifications in a way a purchasing officer can actually evaluate. The change was not in the number of enquiries so much as in their quality — people now call having already decided we can do the job, so the conversation starts at commercial terms.

They talked us out of half of what we asked for

We went in with a long list of features we were certain we needed. They built roughly half of it and explained clearly why the rest would be maintained forever and used by nobody. Six months on they were right about every item. The store is fast on phones, which matters because that is where almost all of our traffic comes from, and our team updates the catalogue ourselves without calling anyone.

Parallel running for a full month meant nobody had to trust it blind

Replacing a system a clinic depends on is frightening, and most vendors we spoke to proposed a weekend cutover. Sayak ran the new system alongside our registers for a full month and only switched once the numbers matched every day. Our front desk staff were part of the design rather than being trained at the end, which is why they actually use it. Report preparation that took a person most of a morning now takes minutes.

Common questions

If yours is not here, ask it on the call. We would rather answer a hard question early than discover a mismatch in week six.

Usually crawl budget and duplication rather than content. Faceted navigation on a moderate catalogue can generate hundreds of thousands of near-duplicate URLs, and Google spends its crawl on those instead of your category pages. Controlling which facet combinations are indexable, canonicalised or blocked is the fix, and no amount of blog content substitutes for it.

Rarely first. The commercial search volume on a store sits on category and subcategory pages, because that is how people search. Blog content can support that and it is frequently where agencies spend budget because it is easy to produce and easy to report on. Fix the architecture and the category pages before writing a single article.

Yes, and using manufacturer text is the most common reason product pages fail to rank. Every competitor selling the same item published the same words, so there is nothing to distinguish your page. Unique descriptions matter most on products where you have genuine search demand; for a long tail of low-demand items the effort is better spent on categories.

Keep the page, mark it unavailable honestly and route to the closest alternative. Removing it discards accumulated search equity and any traffic it still receives; leaving it buyable generates orders you cannot fulfil and cancellations that damage trust. The middle path preserves the value without the frustration.

A one-off audit covering faceted navigation, crawl efficiency and architecture runs ₹40,000 to ₹1,20,000. Ongoing work with category content, product descriptions and technical maintenance is ₹30,000 to ₹90,000 a month. Large catalogues or replatform protection start around ₹90,000 a month.
