Offshore web and software development for Sydney

Sydney has the highest agency rates in Australia and the most demanding procurement processes. Both are reasons businesses here call us, and the second one is why we keep our security and privacy documentation ready rather than assembling it after the first meeting.

Almost every Sydney enquiry we receive has already been quoted by at least one local agency. The buyer is not asking whether offshore is cheaper, because they can see that it is. They are asking whether it is manageable: whether the work will need redoing, whether their compliance team will allow it, and whether the time difference will turn a three-month project into a nine-month one.

Those are the right questions and Sydney asks them more rigorously than anywhere else in Australia, because the city is dominated by financial services, insurance and professional firms that have formal vendor processes. A Sydney fintech does not engage a supplier on a phone call. It sends a security questionnaire, asks where data will reside, and wants to know who specifically will have access.

We are comfortable with that. It is slower than a Gold Coast engagement and it filters for clients who take the arrangement seriously, which suits us. What follows covers what we cost in Australian dollars, how the overlap actually works from Sydney, and what our answers are to the questions your procurement team will ask.

The Sydney sectors we work in

Sydney enquiries skew toward regulated industries, which means security review, data residency questions and a procurement process before anything is signed. We expect that and have the documentation ready rather than assembling it after the first meeting.

Why Sydney buyers look offshore at all

Sydney agency rates reflect Sydney costs. Commercial rent in the CBD or North Sydney, salaries competitive with the banks and the large consultancies that hire the same people, and a talent pool small enough that experienced developers have been bid up for a decade. A senior developer at a Sydney agency is an expensive person to employ and the day rate follows.

The result is that a build which would be routine elsewhere becomes a capital decision. A corporate website with a proper CMS at thirty to ninety thousand dollars needs board approval at a mid-sized firm, and a custom application at two hundred thousand plus needs a business case. Plenty of worthwhile projects simply do not get built.

Offshore changes that arithmetic enough to make the project viable rather than merely cheaper. The same corporate site with us sits in the two and a half to eight thousand range, which moves it from a capital decision to an operating one. That shift, rather than the raw saving, is usually what actually unlocks the work.

The caution we give every Sydney buyer is the same: do not choose on rate alone. The gap between a good offshore supplier and a bad one is far wider than the gap between offshore and local, and the bad experiences that give the model its reputation almost always trace back to selecting the cheapest bid on a platform.

What your procurement and security review will ask

Sydney is the Australian city where we most often go through a formal vendor assessment, so we keep the answers documented rather than improvising them.

Where will data be stored is usually first. Our default answer is that production data stays in your cloud account, in an Australian region if you want it there, and we access it under named credentials that you issue and can revoke. We do not copy production data to our own infrastructure, and for most builds we do not need production data at all.

Who will have access is second. We name the individuals, not a team. Access is logged, reviewed at each milestone and revoked at completion. If a person leaves the engagement, their access goes that day rather than at the next audit.

What happens at the end is third and the one most often skipped by suppliers. Code, credentials, documentation and any data we hold are handed over on completion, and the obligation to delete what we no longer need is in the contract rather than a policy document. We will also do a handover period with your own team rather than dropping a repository and disappearing.

Under Australian Privacy Principle 8 you remain accountable for what we do with personal information, so all of the above needs to be contractual. We sign your template. We do not require you to sign ours.

In practice

Production data stays in your cloud account, Australian region if required.
Named individuals with issued credentials, logged access, revoked at completion.
Development against anonymised or synthetic data wherever the build allows.
Vendor security questionnaires completed, not deflected.
Handover of code, credentials and documentation written into the contract.

The overlap from Sydney, specifically

New South Wales observes daylight saving, so the gap to India moves between four and a half hours in winter and five and a half in summer. Our working day of 09:30 to 19:30 IST lands at roughly 14:00 to midnight Sydney time in winter, and 15:00 to one in the morning in summer.

The practical overlap is therefore your early-to-mid afternoon: about three hours in winter, two in summer. That is enough for one substantial scheduled call a week and occasional ad-hoc conversation, and it is not enough for daily standups at a time that suits both sides.

So we run Sydney engagements on a weekly-call rhythm with written daily handovers, rather than pretending a daily meeting is workable. The call is fixed, has an agenda circulated beforehand, and is used for decisions rather than status. Status arrives in writing at the end of our day, which is the middle of your night, so it is waiting when you start.

Sydney clients coming from a local agency relationship usually find the first fortnight uncomfortable and then prefer it, because the written record removes the ambiguity that verbal agreement leaves behind.

Where our work fits the Sydney economy

Financial services and insurance dominate the city, and our useful contribution there is rarely the core platform, which is usually a regulated system bought rather than built. It is the layer around it: client portals, document workflow, onboarding processes that still run on email, and reporting that someone currently assembles by hand before a committee meeting. Unglamorous, well-defined, and where most of the wasted hours in a professional firm actually sit.

Property and proptech is the second concentration, and there the work is closer to conventional web engineering: listing platforms, portals for tenants or investors, and integration between a CRM and whatever the agency uses for contracts.

Professional services firms, meaning law, accounting, consulting and advisory, mostly need their website to survive scrutiny from a prospective client who is checking credentials rather than browsing. That is a structure, content and performance problem rather than a visual one.

Where we would tell a Sydney buyer to hire locally: anything requiring deep knowledge of Australian financial regulation, ASIC reporting formats or APRA prudential standards. We can build to a specification written by someone who knows those; we should not be writing it.

Working with Sydney agencies

Sydney has a dense agency and studio sector, and a meaningful share of our work in the city is white-label engineering behind those firms rather than direct.

The arrangement is the standard one: you own the client, the brief and the commercial terms, and we supply engineering inside your repository under your conventions. We do not appear in your deliverables, contact your client, or approach them after the engagement ends, and those are contract terms rather than assurances.

What it solves is the capacity problem that afflicts every independent studio. Winning a large build means declining it, hiring and carrying the cost through the next quiet quarter, or subcontracting. For a studio of ten to thirty people the third option is usually the only one that does not distort the business.

We are most useful to Sydney studios on the engineering-heavy end: integrations, application work, performance rescue, and anything where the sold design has technical implications nobody costed. We are least useful as a design partner, because you already have that.

The time difference, stated plainly

3 hours a day where we are both at a desk

Our working day of 09:30–19:30 IST covers roughly 14:00–24:00 AEST, so the usable overlap is your afternoon against our morning — about three hours, or two when daylight saving is in effect in New South Wales and Victoria. Queensland does not observe it, so Brisbane and the Gold Coast hold a steady four-and-a-half-hour gap all year.

Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles

APP 8 governs cross-border disclosure of personal information, which is the clause that matters when an Australian business engages an offshore developer. In practice it means you remain accountable for what we do with the data, so the contract has to name what we may access, where it is stored and what happens at the end. We work to that structure by default and will sign your template rather than insisting on ours.

Questions

What Sydney buyers ask

We will tell you in the first conversation if we are a poor fit for what you are describing, including when the time difference makes us the wrong choice.

Indicatively, a corporate website with a CMS runs A$2,500 to A$8,000 with us against A$30,000 to A$90,000 from a Sydney agency. The more useful framing is that it moves a project from a capital decision requiring board approval to an operating one, which is usually what actually unlocks the work. Allow for coordination overhead across the time difference when comparing total cost rather than hourly rate.

Four and a half hours in winter, five and a half when New South Wales is on daylight saving. Our working day covers roughly 14:00 to midnight Sydney time, so the practical overlap is your early to mid afternoon: about three hours, two in summer. We run Sydney engagements on one fixed weekly call inside that window with written daily handovers, rather than pretending daily standups work.

Most do, provided the arrangement is documented properly. The questions are consistent: where data is stored, who has access, and what happens at the end. Our defaults are production data staying in your cloud account in an Australian region, named individuals with issued and revocable credentials, and handover plus deletion obligations written into the contract. We complete vendor security questionnaires and sign your template rather than requiring ours.

No. We have one office and it is in Kolkata. We will not list a virtual office or coworking address as a Sydney place of business, because doing so breaches Google policy and potentially the Australian Consumer Law. If a local presence is a genuine requirement for you, we are not the right supplier and will say so in the first call.

Yes, and it is routine for this market. We sign your NDA before any brief is shared, work to your security requirements rather than proposing our own, and restrict access to named individuals. For regulated clients we typically develop against anonymised or synthetic datasets so that production personal information never leaves your environment at all.
