Web and software development in George Town, Grand Cayman
George Town holds one of the world’s largest concentrations of financial-services businesses in a town of a few thousand people, alongside a substantial tourism and marine economy. The two need almost entirely different things from us.
Grand Cayman is a genuinely unusual market. A population of roughly seventy thousand supports thousands of investment funds, a large captive insurance sector, a dense cluster of law firms and corporate service providers, and a tourism economy alongside all of it. The commercial sophistication is out of all proportion to the island’s size, and the local software supply does not match it.
A George Town firm needing an investor portal, a document workflow an auditor can follow, or a booking system that reduces aggregator commission usually finds itself choosing between a North American consultancy at North American prices and a freelancer. There is very little in between.
We should be honest about the constraint before anything else: Cayman is ten and a half hours behind India with no daylight saving, so your working morning is the middle of our night. The overlap is about one hour. We run Cayman work asynchronously by design and would rather tell you that now than have you discover it in month two.
The George Town sectors we work in
The work here divides cleanly. Financial-services firms need internal systems — investor portals, document workflow, reporting that satisfies an auditor — where the constraint is oversight and evidence rather than scale. Tourism and marine businesses need fast, direct-booking websites that reduce what they pay to aggregators. We do both, and they are almost unrelated engagements.

Financial services: systems built for evidence, not scale
For fund administrators, captive insurers, trust companies and corporate service providers, the binding constraint on a system is almost never volume. The transaction counts are modest by any commercial standard. It is evidence: being able to demonstrate who did what, when, under what authority, to someone external who is looking for gaps.
That changes what good engineering looks like. An audit trail is not a logging afterthought, it is a first-class requirement that shapes the data model. Role-based access has to be genuinely enforced at the data layer rather than hidden in the interface. Approval chains need to record not just the decision but who was entitled to make it at that moment, which means permission history matters as much as current permission state.
The recurring builds are investor and client portals with proper access segregation, document workflow with complete traceability, onboarding and know-your-customer processes moved off email and shared drives, and regulatory or board reporting assembled automatically rather than by someone the night before.
None of this is technically exotic. It is exacting, and it is badly served by suppliers who treat auditability as a feature to add later rather than a constraint to design around.
In practice
Every engagement starts with a conversation, not a proposal template.

Tourism and marine: the commission problem
The other half of George Town work is commercially straightforward and technically unrelated. Dive operators, charter businesses, villa rentals, restaurants and tour operators lose a substantial share of revenue to booking aggregators.
The answer is a direct channel good enough that guests prefer it. Fast on a phone, because trip planning is overwhelmingly phone-first. Honest about what the experience actually is, since mismatched expectations generate the refunds and poor reviews that cost more than the booking. As few steps between wanting it and having paid as the business permits. And visible in search for the phrases travellers use when planning a Caribbean trip rather than only for your business name.
The arithmetic is worth doing before committing. An operator taking four hundred bookings a year at an average of three hundred dollars, paying fifteen per cent, is spending eighteen thousand annually on commission. Moving a third direct covers a good site in the first year.
We would not advise leaving the aggregators, which are a genuine discovery channel. The objective is to stop paying commission on guests who would have found you anyway.

How an asynchronous engagement actually runs
Cayman is on Eastern Standard Time year-round. Our working day of 09:30 to 19:30 IST is 23:00 to 09:00 in George Town, so the only realistic shared hour is the end of our day against the start of yours: about nine to ten in the morning your time.
We structure around that rather than hoping. One fixed live call each week inside the overlap, with an agenda circulated the previous day so both sides arrive prepared. It is used for decisions, not status.
Status arrives in writing at the end of our working day, which is before you start yours, so there is always a current picture waiting. Questions go into a shared channel with enough context to be answered without a conversation, which is a discipline on our side rather than yours. Decisions are recorded in a single document rather than scattered through a thread.
The compensating benefit is one Cayman clients raise unprompted: because everything is written, there is an unambiguous record of what was asked and agreed. Scope disputes, which are the most common source of friction in software projects, largely do not happen.
If your project genuinely needs a supplier reachable at two in the afternoon Cayman time, we are the wrong choice and a North American firm is the right one. We will say so in the first exchange.

CIMA oversight and what a regulated client needs from us
For a CIMA-regulated entity the regulator does not care whether we are competent. It cares whether you can evidence that you assessed us, defined what we do, monitor it, and have a plan for what happens if we stop.
We build for that. Access is restricted to named individuals and logged. Every change is version controlled and attributable to a person. Documentation is written to be read by someone who was not involved rather than as a reminder to ourselves. An exit plan covering handover of code, credentials and documentation is in the contract from the start rather than negotiated at the end.
On data, the Data Protection Act (2021 Revision) is modelled closely on the GDPR, so the principles are familiar: lawful basis, purpose limitation, minimisation, and conditions on transfer. For most builds the cleanest answer is to avoid the transfer question altogether by developing against anonymised or synthetic data and restricting production access to named individuals under logged conditions.
We are not Cayman attorneys and this is not legal advice. Your compliance officer should review any arrangement.

What this costs in Cayman dollars
The realistic alternative for a George Town business is a North American consultancy, so that is the comparison worth making.
Start small, for a specific reason
We are more insistent with Cayman clients than any other market that the first engagement is small. It is the only reliable way to find out whether asynchronous working suits your organisation, and some organisations genuinely dislike it. Two to four weeks, bounded and useful on its own, is enough to know.
| Project | North American consultancy | With us |
|---|---|---|
| Operator or business website | CI$8,000 - 25,000 | CI$650 - 1,800 |
| Direct booking platform | CI$30,000 - 120,000 | CI$2,500 - 12,000 |
| Investor or client portal | CI$80,000 - 350,000 | CI$6,000 - 45,000 |
| Document workflow with audit trail | CI$60,000 - 250,000 | CI$5,000 - 35,000 |
| Reporting automation | CI$35,000 - 140,000 | CI$3,000 - 16,000 |
1 hours a day where we are both at a desk
This is the hardest scheduling relationship on our list and we will not pretend otherwise. Cayman sits ten and a half hours behind IST and does not observe daylight saving, so your working morning is the middle of our night. The practical overlap is roughly 19:30–20:30 IST against 09:00–10:00 EST. We run Cayman engagements asynchronously by design, with one fixed live call a week in that window and written handovers either side of it.
Data Protection Act (2021 Revision)
The Cayman DPA is modelled closely on the GDPR, so the transfer principles will feel familiar to anyone who has handled a European engagement. For regulated entities there is a second layer: CIMA outsourcing expectations mean a fund administrator or insurer must be able to evidence oversight of a service provider, including one offshore. We build to that standard, with documented access control, named personnel and an exit plan written into the contract.

What George Town buyers ask
We will tell you in the first conversation if we are a poor fit for what you are describing, including when the time difference makes us the wrong choice.
Yes, provided the engagement is built around the time difference rather than in spite of it. Cayman is ten and a half hours behind India with no daylight saving, so the overlap is roughly nine to ten in the morning your time. We run one fixed weekly call in that window with written daily handovers either side. If your project needs someone reachable mid-afternoon Cayman time, we are the wrong supplier and will say so.
Investor and client portals with genuine access segregation, document workflow with complete audit trails, onboarding and know-your-customer processes moved off email and shared drives, and board or regulatory reporting assembled automatically. The binding constraint is almost never transaction volume, which is modest. It is evidence: demonstrating who did what, when, and under what authority.
By building so that you can evidence oversight. Named individuals with logged access, version-controlled changes attributable to a person, documentation written for someone who was not involved, and an exit plan covering code, credentials and documentation in the contract from day one. The regulator is interested in your ability to demonstrate control of a supplier, not in our competence per se.
Yes. The commercial case is the aggregator commission: an operator taking four hundred bookings a year at three hundred dollars average and paying fifteen per cent spends eighteen thousand annually. Moving a third direct covers a good site in year one. The build has to be paired with search visibility for trip-planning phrases, which we handle in the same engagement.
An operator or business website runs CI$650 to CI$1,800 with us against CI$8,000 to CI$25,000 from a North American consultancy. A direct booking platform is CI$2,500 to CI$12,000 against CI$30,000 to CI$120,000. Portals and workflow systems are larger and priced on scope. These are indicative bands for original work rather than quotations.
